What could be more exciting that coming
face to face with a polar bear separated by
only a few feet?
Come join us as we ride Polar Rovers over
the snow and ice in search of the largest bears
in “Churchill, the Polar Bear Capital of the
World.” Enjoy exploring the Arctic tundra in
a heated, specially built Rover with all of the
comforts which will allow you to experience
the snowy Arctic landscapes and easily see
wildlife in safety.
Polar bears congregate on the shore of
Hudson Bay to wait for the sea ice to form a
solid platform from which they can hunt
ringed seals. The diet of seals gives these
enormous animals the nutrition and calories
to grow large and sustain them for most of the
year. The males can weigh 1,500 pounds and
the females are about half that weight. The
cubs have enduring charm. The females will
have a cub or two in tow and keep a close eye
on any males in the area.
The “King of the Arctic” is considered a
vulnerable species over most of its Arctic
range, but the Churchill population is the
world’s largest, is well protected, and
well studied. The “Ice Bear,” as it is also
known, has many adaptations to its marine
lifestyle of moving across ice. The bear has
large furry feet and short, sharp claws giving
it good traction on ice, a white coat to blend
in, hollow insulating fur, small ears, and a
thick layer of energy rich insulating blubber.
The polar bear is significant to all the
peoples of the North, and we will learn from
local elders of the First Nation about their
importance. Also explore the village of
Churchill, its stores, Eskimo museum, and
the Parks Canada Interpretive Center at the
edge of Hudson Bay.
Come join us and come face to face with
the “King of the Arctic” in North America’s
greatest polar bear experience!
